The 2010 Cotes du Rhone Jules Rochebonne displays more density and structure as well as a touch of oak (which I had not noticed in previous vintages). Nevertheless, it has plenty of stuffing. An unusual blend for a Cotes du Rhone, it is composed of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache. Give it time to round into shape, and drink it over the next decade.
Details
Eric Bonnet at Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique learned winemaking in Burgundy and it really shows in the lovely wines he crafts at his family's domaine. Today Bonnet, with his parents, Gerard and Marie-Claude, and his wife Julie Moro, work together at Bastide Saint Dominique, fashioning some of the best values in the Rhone.
Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique Cotes du Rhone "Jules Rochebonne" is a blend of 75% Syrah and 25% Grenache from a selection out of the Domaine's best parcels of Syrah, mostly located in the areas “Champovin” and “Bois Lauzon. The Grenache is aged in concrete vats (reflecting La Bastide's typical practice of not using oak for Grenache) and the Syrah is aged in neutral oak barrels. This is a full-bodied Cotes du Rhone whose large percentage of Syrah sets it apart from its brethren.
